This manuscript volume by a modern author recounts the history of Camp Rock Spring from its founding in December 1866, to its abandonment in May 1868. Its garrison (elements of the 1st and 8th U.S. Cavalry Regiments and the 9th, 14th, and 23rd U.S. Infantry Regiments), its commanding officers, and the nearby Paiute and Walapai Indians which it confronted are described in detail. Reference is made also to related occurrences along the Mojave Road and elsewhere in southeastern California and western Arizona. Capsule biographies of officers plus a summary history of routes between Arizona and California carry the narrative beyond the three years on which most of the work concentrates.
